What do you need Heating or Cooling Degree Days for?
Degree Days reflect a location’s temperature conditions that influence a building’s heating and cooling demand. Heating and Cooling Degree Days are used widely in Energy Management for analyzing historical energy usage, evaluating optimization measurements, or designing and dimensioning HVAC components.
Growing Degree Days are another use case in agriculture that is not covered by Energy Data GmbH.
How do you calculate degree days?
Degree Days are the product of a day and the difference between a base temperature and the outside air temperature.
The base temperature (also called the balance point) is a threshold value of the outside air temperature below which heating or cooling is required to maintain the desired room temperature.
The unit is Kelvin days (K • d). Degree Days are only determining days on which the outside air temperature drops below (for Heating Degree Days) or exceeds (for Cooling Degree Days) the balance point. Otherwise, the day counts as zero Degree Days.

Can I test your service before subscribing to a paid plan?

You can absolutely test our service before subscribing to a paid plan. We have a free membership that gives you access to all of our tools but with limited historical data (only current and the last year).

You can also start with a 7-day trial for full access to our web applications. We will not charge you anything during the trial period, but we will ask you for your payment details to prevent spam.

If you want to test the API, just book one of our API subscriptions and test the full range of features. If you find that the service does not meet your expectations within 30 days, you can cancel the subscription without giving any reason and get the full purchase price back.

How can I integrate the data in my existing software?
We provide an Application Programming Interface (API) so that software applications can easily access Energy Data’s services. Many energy-management software systems use our API to manage their data.

Can I trust the data from Energy Data?
Yes, of course! Energy Data GmbH’s database includes decades of records from over 23,000 weather stations worldwide. We obtained the weather observations from the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) and the Integrated Surface Database (ISD). Quality checks by different algorithms of the systems are performed to check for, e.g. extreme values and limits, consistency between parameters, and continuity between observations.
